How I would have styled the modern-day Lizzie Bennett

Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist in the 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She is bold, intelligent, independent, with a witty sense of humor. Elizabeth is a very beautiful young lady with a peach complexion, long brown slightly curly hair, full lips and brown eyes. She's slim and considered to be the second prettiest of the five sisters. Her hobbies are reading, doing needlework, dancing at balls, taking long walks, and gossiping with her sister Jane.

This is how I would have styled and brought to life a modern-day Elizabeth Bennett for a movie remake.

British Country style

My modern-day Elizabeth Bennet has a simple style, earthy, casual, practical, natural and because of the location of the story (Britain countryside) and her active lifestyle, I would successfully bring her character to life by choosing carefully some timeless wardrobe staples inspired by a classic British country style.

Warm Color palette

To put her wardrobe together, I will choose pieces in the same neutral colors, with warm, earthy tones such as brown, beige, khaki, mustard, brick, charcoal, oak, plum, mocha, warm yellow, and orange tones. The fabrics and materials will be natural such as leather, wool, cotton. Elizabeth loves reading and she loves quality over quantity, she is more into books than eccentric fashion.

Below is a list of some wardrobe essentials to depict a modern-day Elizabeth Bennet.

Tweed coat

While being a classic in any British wardrobe, tweed can come in many different colors, textures, and types (tweed blazer, long tweed coat). Made with natural wool, it will look stunning with jeans, shirts, jumpers, boots for Elizabeth to go for a walk, to the local library or coffee shop, attend a casual event.

Wax Jacket

An iconic wax jacket to complete the excursion look. in both green or navy blue - they go perfectly with jeans and are great for keeping dry while on a walk.

Tweed skirt

Cute and warm tweed skirt. Depending on how 'country' you want to go there are so many color options around. Even for mooching around town or after dinner drinks the tweed skirt is perfect for both. It looks perfect with a casual T-shirt and cardigan or a simple shirt. Or with a lace camisole and high boots with a long cardigan for the perfect 'pub' combo in the winter.

Wool Blazer

Yes, it is different from the tweed jacket! A wool blazer is a great way of adding a bit of warmth and coziness to an everyday look. It can be worn with jeans or a cocktail dress on a night out. It can even be styled as a layering piece as seen in some of the pictures above.

Cotton shirt

A shirt is a British staple in winter, perfect for layering under a big jumper, with jeans or a skirt and boots.

Warm wool Jumper

A cable knit one preferably which is a practical staple of every British wardrobe.

Brown Trousers

Made of cord, moleskin, or cotton. I feel that a lot of more natural and earthy looking trousers are often forgotten about, but they can look really lovely. They also go well with many of the items mentioned above and are a good alternative to jeans. Neutral trousers can also be paired with most autumnal colors.

And Accessories

A wide brim hat to elevate Lizzie’s look; A nice Tan Leather Bag (a bag you can carry a hat, gloves, scarf, her books, newspapers and flask in and it still won’t be full); A chunky tartan scarf in natural fabric such as cashmere or wool; leather outdoor boots for her walks in the country lanes; and Wellies for the rainy days; Thickest socks ever, perfect for layering under boots and tucking your trousers into. Belts - to make Lizzie look more put together, breaking up her outfit or to emphasis her waist, can go with jeans or a nice flower dress in summer.

And finally, a “Dumb phone” because Lizzie will make a political statement against those unnecessary distractions of the modern age!
